In the 25 years since 9/11, the War on Terror has waged on, costing trillions of dollars, thousands of lives, and, for many, a faltering perception of American hegemony. Four presidents have adapted the strategy of their administrations and ideas of their times to make critical decisions that have shaped the role America plays on the world stage. CNN’s national security analyst Peter Bergen joins David M. Rubenstein to discuss how the Bush, Obama, Biden, and Trump strategies have differed, how counterterrorism efforts have developed, and the disasters that might have been avoided in the Middle East had different decisions been made.
Peter Bergen is vice president of New America, CNN’s national security analyst, and the author of several books, including All the Presidents’ Wars: Twenty-Five Years of America’s War on Terror.
David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the host of History with David Rubenstein on PBS and the author of the upcoming Inside the Owner’s Box: Conversations on Power and Leadership in Sports, among other books.
